On today’s exploration, we are off to Lykens Pennsylvania, a borough in Dauphin County. Built on mining in 1900 the population was 2,762 and as of the 2010 census, the population has declined to 1,779.

Conflicting information has the school closing in 1990 or 1991, one account says that the upper floor was closed off several years before the final closing of the school. Another account states the high school moved out in 1990 and for one remaining year the building was used for elementary school. Students now attend schools that are a part of the Upper Dauphin Area School District. Happy we made the trip today as the demolition of the Lykens Public School has started the building built as part of an addition to the school has already come down.
