Mahanoy Township High School

Originally knows as the ‘White School’ for its resemblance to the White House Mahanoy Township High School was a giant on the hill. In 1938 the school was completely destroyed by fire. Rebuilt in 1940 and in use until 1959. After 3 area high schools, Mahanoy City High School, Mahanoy Township High School, and Gilberton High School merged into a single school, the Mahanoy Township High School building became the Mahanoy Area Intermediate School and was in use until the end of the 2001-2002 school year.

Sitting vacant for 15 years until 2017 when an investment group from New York purchased the property for back taxes in the amount of $1,086. Some work on the interior was started, much of the school fixtures have been removed. Attempts were made to convert this Art Deco school into a more usable state, however, at this time all work has since stopped and Mother Nature is not taking kindly to this crumbling building. Listed on the market for $129,000, we only hope that something happens to this amazing building. But sadly for this town, and many just like it, it’s too little too late.
